This project was initially an expressive self portrait, but as my idea and work progressed I chose to make it my landscape project. At first, I was incorporating elements into the thumbnails that would represent myself. The tree has 28 butterflies, used to represent my birthday, December 28th. The rocks are elements that symbolize the importance of being grounded, and the flowers represent my personality. While the object off to the side is a doe, it is unusually set in the rainforest. I did this purposely to create a whimsical and serene landscape.
I am still learning how to best use color pencil to get the most realistic drawing, but I used a new technique to enhance the drawing. I used white gel pen over the water and on the rocks to make the water look transparent, and appear to be moving. I shaded heavily under the butterfly wings to make it seem they are hovering on the tree. I tried to make my composition similar to a major-minor, but I wanted to get the effect that the leaves and flowers are welcoming you to a mystical scene. I need to develop my technique when drawing shadows. I saw improvement on the bottom left corner, but the top right corner my skills lacked in creating a shadow and strong hues.
My favorite part of this project was drawing the rocks and the flowers on the left, because I practiced creating different lines in order to get different textures. From this project I learned that I need to better control my composition. This project has a lot of color, and element that make it busy, and so I need to be better aware of this habit in the future. My hand on the color pencil may be too light, or it might be my technique that I have to better develop.
