I used a lot of stippling to get the textural effect of the concrete. As you can see, the painting is not as defined and detailed, because I am not used to doing stippling that I notice that I tend to blend the oils too much. Now seeing the photos side by side I want to go and retouch the concrete with more stippling.
The hardest part of this project was to get the highlights on the shoes. The difficult part was that when there is a color and you had a white highlight, you need to make sure its semi-dry. I did not consider this when placing my highlights. This also contributed to the mudding effect.
My favorite pair is the top left socks and sandals combo. I had fun painting the fuzzy socks. I liked that the sandals had the balance in highlight/shadow that gave it depth. I can easily touch this up by going back in with Van Dyke's Brown (this is a very rich dark brown). This brown will give it color and warmth while making a dark shadow. Mixing my blues, I will use a small brush and retouch on the concrete with more stippling.
This project taught me more about layering with oils and stippling.
I will make an update on this painting.
